Game 3 Algebra 3 Dot
How to Play: Find a value for x and/or y (any whole number from 2 to 9) which, when used together with the other numbers on the wheel, can make the number 24. You can add, subtract, multiply and divide. Use all four numbers on the wheel (or number equivalent of the algebraic expression(s)), but use each only once.
- Click START button; the timer counts down from
60 seconds. Clickable black numbers and one or more algebraic
expression(s) appear on the wheel.
- Where possible, reduce the algebraic expression(s) to a simpler form (do this mentally or using a paper and pencil).
- Select a number from 2 to 9 from the x variable bar.
- If the algebraic expression also contains a y variable, select a number from 2 to 9 from the y variable bar.
- The algebraic expression will automatically turn into a number equivalent for the value(s) that you chose for x and/or y.
Six different number equivalents will be displayed. One will be the correct
equivalent; the other five are incorrect. Click the correct equivalent
number as it appears and that number will be "fixed" for use in building
your solution. If you click on an incorrect equivalent value you will
be shown the correct equivalent value. Click START to begin again.
- If the card contains more than one algebraic expression. repeat step 5.
- To build your solution to make 24, Click on a number, then Click on an operation sign, then Click on a second number. This is the first step of your solution. The result of your first step will be automatically shown. For step two, you can combine the result, or the remaining number(s) on the wheel, using the operation signs as you did in your first step. Options for the third step is the same as step two. The final answer must be 24.
- Once you are sure the solution you built is
correct CLICK the ENTER button.
- If your solution is correct, a smiley face appears
in the white box inside the Success Chart. The game automatically
shows the next card. If you solve one card within 90 seconds,
a gray 24® game “sticker” will
appear on your Success Chart. If time runs out before you solve
the card, try again. If you answer incorrectly you must start back at the triangle level
(no penalty for missing the power jump).
- Once you receive six 24 gray game stickers,
you will be awarded the stickers permanently —the gray stickers
become solid color to indicate they have been added to your total
sticker count. The
same process repeats for the Gold-Star Stickers. To earn Gold
Star stickers you must correctly solve two cards within 90 seconds.
Power Jump
Students are given the option to try a Power Jump after they have earned the
first two 24® game stickers on their Success Chart. If they select the Power
Jump option and are successful, they automatically earn the remaining stickers
and move directly to the Gold Star sticker level. If a student is not successful,
the game will continue at the next 24® game sticker level. There is no penalty
for an unsuccessful attempt at the Power Jump. Students may also try a Power
Jump when earning Gold Star stickers.
